Gazebo simulates real sensors; in 0.4.0 this includes sonar and laser range finders (such as the SICKLMS200). I'm currently toying with stereo vision, so the next release will probably contain the kind of sensor you are looking for. But..: They lack of documentation and I've only used them with greyscale images.
