Have you tried adding the location to the LD_LIBRARY_PATH, then? I have LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/local/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH in my .bashrc file. This was before I played around in Eclipse (discontinued the use of Eclipse in favour of CMake in KDevelop, though).
