Dear All, This is to announce a more robust version of the plasticized web page I first demoed back in September. The page uses an invisible signed applet to handle the Plastic communication - I'd be interested in discussions with anyone who has a better way of doing it (and if mods are needed to the Plastic spec, now is definitely the time to raise them). First things first, here's a demo page using the applet: http://plastic.sourceforge.net/tupperware/PlasticApplet/ShowApplet.html Things to know: * The applet must be signed - I've provided a version that's signed by me, and one you can sign yourself is available on request * The demo page uses Javascript to interact with the applet - you'll need to tailor this to your own web page * To keep it small, and relatively simple, the applet only supports sending and receiving messages to load VOTables and FITS images - I'll add spectra if there's demand. Also, it doesn't have the "save To Myspace" functionality. Again, let me know if you need that. * I'll also produce a fuller version that allows arbitrary Plastic messages if there's demand * The applet weighs in at about 150k, but by placing the applet at the bottom of your web page it doesn't cause too much of a lag on loading, and with your server set up to send the correct headers it should get cached client side. * I haven't included code in the JavaScript to fall back gracefully if Java isn't installed - you'd need to do this in a production environment The applet is available for download from: http://plastic.sourceforge.net/tupperware/PlasticApplet/ plasticapplet.jar Get in touch if you want the unsigned version or the source code. With this announce we would also like to invite you to the first VisIVO TUTORIAL 6 March 2007 CINECA - BOLOGNA (Italy) FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT The tutorial aims at introducing the basic features of VisIVO and trains people to use it. The tutorial has a laboratory session, during which the attendees will experiment VisIVO using their own data. The laboratory session can be done using personal laptops. PCs are available. It should send this messages when sending subsets, am I wrong? It works fine with the loadFromURL message (I mean when it loads a votable). Directory names are another issue, if a directory name is longer than 8 chars it is renamed to fit the 8.3 file name format. Do I have to handle that from my side? I get long names from other application (Aladin and XMDV). I'll try to monitor the messages arriving to the hub to check were the file name conversion is done. Apologies for the twee name, but what else would you call small Plastic applications? I've made a small library of plastic applications that offer access to the Desktop via Plastic (if you're using one of the platforms that JDIC has deigned to pay attention to). You can find out about them here: http://plastic.sourceforge.net/multiproject/plastlets/ and java web start them from here: http://plastic.sourceforge.net/multiproject/plastletweb/plastletweb.jnlp I'd be interested to know if the email plastlet works for anyone - it certainly doesn't on XP with Thunderbird. Apparently the JDIC library will be part of Java 6, so hopefully they'll have ironed out the bugs by then (and ported it to Macs). John |

If you're impatient to get hold of the latest plastic hub with the xml-rpc method "perform" (rather than "plastic.client.perform") then there's a new alpha release of the ACR at: http://software.astrogrid.org/jnlp/alpha/astrogrid-desktop/astrogrid-desktop.jnlp This should also have this bug fixed was preventing xml-rpc clients receiving messages if they registered with a list of supported messages (rather than the catch-all empty list). Hi All,
Noel has just released a new version of the ACR and it includes some
updates and fixes to the plastic hub.
Specifically:
It implements the new methods that we've referred to as "version 0.3":

It has some bug fixes (the occasional nullpointer caused by
supplying a name with spaces in it)
It's been much more thoroughly tested (lots of JUnit tests)
It has the prototype but unofficial pollingListener type for Marco
It has a nicer way of listing the currently registered applications
- go to the hub module page and it's the first link you come to. I
don't know if this will persist beyond the restructuring of the ACR gui
that's currently under discussion, but it's quite handy for now.
It shouldn't return values for applications that have registered as
either "no callback" or "polling"
Sadly, it still "pops" when an application registers...(next on my list,
I promise).

Hi all. The Plastic hub is now available in an alpha release of the ACR. I've updated the test client (xmdv) to go with it, and you can try it out from here: http://software.astrogrid.org/votech/ds6/xmdv/ Please use the link on this page to start the ACR as it points to the alpha release. A datafile is attached to play with. That's lots more stuff I'm going to publish soon - not least the API, which has changed a little since the wiki page got taken down. But for now, it's the weekend. Hope you like the logo! J PS To non-windows users - I know that xmdv does work on some flavours of linux, but Ubuntu isn't one of them.
