We have decided, as an extra precaution, to require all users to change their ssh keys. You need to first create a new private/public key pair using ssh-keygen: ssh-keygen -t rsa -f ~/.ssh/identity be sure to protect your private key with a passphrase. Then upload your new public key (found in ~/.ssh/identity.pub) by going to the PlanetLab web page and: - logging in (click the "Login" link) - editing your account info (click the "Manage Account" link) My apologies to those conscientious users that already changed their keys. You can download the current host key for all running PlanetLab nodes from https://www.planet-lab.org/db/nodes/known_hosts.php. Please note that machines in a debug state will have different hosts keys from those published in this list. The attached perl script will download this list, and merge it into your known hosts file. If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me. Paul Brett PlanetLab Support Email: pau...@pl... PlanetLab is coming back up. It will take a while longer
because we're completely re-installing the OS on every
node, but roughly half the nodes are back up at this point.
As I mentioned before, I expect the issues we saw the past
few days to be discussed on the planetlab-arch mailing list.
Please join that list to follow the discussion.
Also, you can read an overview of the latest software running
on PlanetLab (version 2.0) by following the obvious link on
the PlanetLab home page.
Finally, you can start creating dynamic slices for your projects,
although not all the nodes are available to be assigned just yet.
You can get to the "dynamic slices" page either by following the
"GUI interface" link on the 2.0 overview page, or by going directly
to
www.planet-lab.org/db/slices
You'll need to log in. Warning: we haven't completely purged links
to the old static slices from the web page; please ignore them and
go directly to the dynamic slice page using the URL given above.

Wait for us to take it out. If you switch it to boot, it won't work unless the node has been reinstalled to 2.0 (if thats the case, it should already be up and running). See http://planet-lab.org/announce/announce20031219.php for more information. Thanks, Aaron On Monday 22 December 2003 08:53 am, Ronen I. The reason is probably that your node is in DEBUG mode and accessible = only from the terminal (itself) and from planetlab support. I have noticed that the site admin can take the machine out of DEBUG = mode (the start option). The question is: Should we use that option? or should we wait for an = activation from plantlab support? Ronen, |

Hello, I just realzied that I cannot login the planetlab machines anymore. Even though I have changed my public/private key pairs so many times(using "ssh-keygen -t rsa -f ~/.ssh/identity" and upload identity.pub). It always has the following error message: Permission denied (publickey,keyboard-interactive). It even didn't give me any chance to input the passphrase. If you have any idea, could you please let me know? Thanks, Zhi |

We are planning some upgrades to the PlanetLab infrastructure over the next few weeks, mostly having to do with support for dynamic slices and stricter slice isolation. The first step will require us to reboot many of the machines. This is just a warning that the reboots will happen over the next couple of days. This reboot will enable dynamic slices, but will not effect static slices. More info on dynamic slices (and other plans) to follow shortly... Larry |

There are some machines in which this happens even if everything is setup correctly, and it is obviously a bug. I've already identified planetlab1-6.cs.berkeley.edu as nodes with this problem. If you expect to be able to and it works on other machines, please email PlanetLab Support with the hostname so we can check it out. We are just rolling out a new PlanetLab node installer and the newly installed nodes only have the dynamic slices (you wouldn't have been able to login using the "static" ogi6). Bummer about glibc. I'm going with the "dynamic slices" idea for now. Using the web=20 interface, I see a list of a few (40ish) nodes I could assign to my=20 dynamic slice. Sylvia Ratnasamy, Sean Rhea, and I are working on OpenHash, a public DHT service that supports a put()/get() interface. OpenHash will run on PlanetLab nodes continuously; thus it will be a service, and not a library that requires you to bring up your own DHT and keep it running. A good part of the motivation for OpenHash is to provide a broadly accessible service that offers a DHT routing layer, rendezvous, and persistent (key, value) storage for those who want to *use* a DHT, but not *run* one. We've submitted a (very) preliminary argument for and description of OpenHash to IPTPS 2004; interested parties can find a draft at: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~bkarp/openhash-preprint.pdf We're hard at work on the first-pass implementation of OpenHash. While the system isn't available for use yet, we hope to be testing an early pre-alpha version in January. -Brad, bk...@cs... |

You could use our "EZ" interface to slice creation and maintenance,
which can just do this for you. I just posted this to
planetlab-announce; not everyone gets that, despite its name:

Subject: Simple slice creation interface available
Date: Fri, 05 Dec 2003 07:50:49 -0700
For resource management reasons in crunch time, dynamic slices are
coming, whether you like them or not. Here's a reason to like them:
Rob has created a super-simple super-slick Web frontend to Emulab's
interface to PlanetLab. The frontend is not only EZ, it has a number
of handy features.
You can look at the two key Web pages to decide if it looks useful to you.
This 2-line Web form lets you create a slice on N PlanetLab nodes,
or on one node at each site, or on all of them:
http://www.emulab.net/plab_interface_mockup/plab_ez.html
The more advanced form is still "guaranteed EZ", but it lets you
specify other stuff, like tarballs and RPMs to distribute to all nodes
in your slice, a command to run on each node when it starts up, etc etc:
http://www.emulab.net/plab_interface_mockup/plab_advanced.html
Hopefully PlanetLab management will let us share their account database,
and we're talking. Meanwhile, if you want to use this, sign up
for an account at http://www.emulab.net ; or if you already have one,
ask us to set your "plab-ok" bit.
-----
Also, if you update your RPMs or tarballs, you can push them out to
all your nodes with one click. Earlier you asked about synchronized
command startup: that is coming soon, when we finish extending our
event system to the wide-area. What we have now runs when the vserver
boots.
