Well, gzip really should be there, I'm a bit surprised we didn't catch it (the proposed rpm list was sent out for review by all). If you have a mirror for the RPMs, then use either curl or wget (both in the image), to save it somewhere before installing it. Might want to check out YUM too (http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/). There should be some slice provisioning services coming along as well.
