[Planetlab-users] less, man, gzip, and rpmbuild

what is the "best" way to install these necessities on a planetlab  
slice?

I'm used to Debian where:
[uw_nspring@planetlab02 uw_nspring]$ rpm -i  
ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/redhat/9/en/os/i386/RedHat/RPMS/rpm-build-4.2 
-0.69.i386.rpm

doesn't happen.
