Hi folks, I am a student of China University of Geosciences, now I plan to buy a PDA that can run placelab, and maybe I have two solutions, one is that using the PDA which list on ‘Place Lab Hardware Compatibility List’ ,such as iPaq 5450,5550iPaq h1940,Dell Axim X30. This solution turns out to be feasible, however the PDA is so expensive that I can't afford. Another is that buying a ordinary PDA without WIFI function, then I get a extended WIFI wireless module from Manufacturers .The advantage of this solution is that it's cheaper ,meanwhile the disadvantage is also obvious, because I don't know if it is doable. So, anyone can give me the answer? I really hope someone can give me a few recommendations! Greetings! |

Hi all, I came across a message in the placelab-users archive from James Howard, I've included the text of his email at the end of my message. I'm working on a project using Place Lab and I need to convert my stumble data (gathered using the PlacelabStumblerGUI.sh script) to map data that I can load using the MapLoaderGUI.sh, so I should be able to use the code in org.placelabx.backend according to James's post, does anyone have the database schema he refers to? Also any pointers on getting this to work would be helpful. I'm running Ubuntu 9.04 and I have MySQL installed. Thanks, Peter. *Re: [Placelab-users] How to turn Stumbler output into a Map? From: James Howard <jamesh@cs...> - 2005-03-19 08:41 Well, placelab.org does some fancy things to try to place beacons accurately. You can check out the software that it runs from cvs (it is in org.placelabx.backend) and set up a mysql database and run it yourself. This will give you the best results, particularly if you have a lot of data, but it can be a pain to set up. Oh, also, the schema for the database isn't in cvs. If you want to go this route, let me know and I will send it to you. Alternatively, you could write up a program that just takes the beacons and jams them into the mapper. Here is a really brain-dead version of such a program. I didn't really test it extensively, but it seems to work. You could incorporate some of the ideas from org.placelabx.backend into it to make it smarter. - james* |

FYI.... A change made to the wigle.net Query output page during the past few months (prior to 09/01/09), has effectively broken MapLoader's ability to download AP Beacon data from wigle.net. A new field, "lasttime", has been inserted between "firsttime" and "flags", causing "trilat" and "trilong" to be offset by one from their former relative positions in the output. As a result, MapLoader reads latitude values as longitude, and "Y" or "N" as latitude. MapLoader needs to be updated to account for this. ~Bob Curtiss |

Hello, I'm trying to use MapLoaderGUI to download beacon data from wigle.net. I was able to do this successfully a few months ago, however now I'm getting a silent failure -- and the hsqlmap.data file has a file size of zero bytes. Has anyone else experienced this? An admin at wigle.net has confirmed that they did make some changes to the format of their query results page during the past couple of months. Since MapLoaderGUI is essentially a "screen scraper", I suspect that the format change has resulted in this silent failure. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Bob Curtiss |

I can run ApViewer and it can find different APs but dosen't show the estimated coordinates. I' ve read the documentation but I can't find how to create the database and which file should the database be in? Could you tell me the detailed steps? I am really anxious! Pablo, The Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG worked for me when running XP. However it did need some tweaking. I don't know about Ubuntu, but on XP the Placelab NDIS network protocol driver had to be installed before the spotter would work. Instructions on its installation in windows can be found here<http://www.nabble.com/placelab-td7243877.html> . I also edited the apviewer and mapdemo example to get them to run on campus. Simplest way of demonstrating its operation. I hope it gives you less headaches than it gave me. If this is a dumb newbie question, please excuse me, but I couldn't see
the answer in the documentation.
Does the PocketPC/WIN-CE version of Placelab support Bluetooth
stumbling? In particular, when I run ApViewer should I expect to be
able to see local bluetooth devices?
Thanks,
Ian

Hello I was trying to do follow "Phone Stumbling HOWTO Guide" but I've found that the Servers application (placelab.sis), only work for the outdated S60 2.0 and does not installs in 3 edition series. I develop only in J2ME but if i can get the placelab.sis source code I could try to compile it to work in Series 60 3 edition. Please where can I find the sourcecode for placelab.sis? I've downloaded the S60 versions and source code of Java application is inside but I haven't found the C code of placelab.sis. Please tell me if somebody is porting to version 3, or if I can try to do it, what I have to do, (download the source code) and then I suppose than suscribe to developers list and get some help ;-) Thanks in advance. |
