jack is totally dependent on the platform in which it runs, i.e. the  
linux kernel, whether it allows realtime code or not. the fact of the  
matter is that if you don't want xruns, you *have* to patch your  
kernel, no matter what the software (jack, pure alsa, oss, etc).  
realtime scheduling means no xruns, if the CPU is fast enough.

I do recognize your grief, though. users should not be expected to  
patch a kernel for something like that. we are in [the latter part  
of] a transition between reliable and non-reliable multimedia  
computing, so the products available have not quite settled down to  
rest on the new technologies.

Anyway, the coolest thing about jack is that it is very simple, and  
thus everywhere. For example, pkaudio compiles on OS X because jack  
runs on OS X. so we've ended up with a standard that is very easy to  
program against. But also, jack is a very thin layer that runs on top  
of the operating system's audio platform. That means that jack is  
only as good as the code you run it on, from the kernel to the sound  
card.

When I fired up pkaudio and Reason on OS X running under jack, and  
saw my code unning right next to propellerheads, I realized what was  
happening, and I say that computer audio has been flattened and  
opened. yay!
