using pictures' meta information make possible the
automatic build of a time hierarchy e.g.

YEAR - MONTH - DAY - TIME OF DAY

Of course there are people that never set the time of
the camera but most do. I guess this could be useful.

For the scanned pictures, people might want to edit the
date field.
