#1 Desktop preferences overrides panel settings

I have to deal with this nasty bug on Raspbian since a couple of years and always hoped it would be fixed:

I use to use a left sided panel.
Each time I modify something in the desktop preferences e.g. change the system font, the panel settings will be reset to display on top.
Then I have to reenter the orientation and the bar width.
Would it be possible to fix that?
OK it's not dramatic, but it sucks...
