FFmpeg implements a lot of patented algorithms as well. I don't know if 
it can be compiled in a way that only includes unproblematic codecs.

Right now I'm leaning towards using Ogg Theora exclusively, at least for 
the first step, as I already did with Vorbis for sound. But nothing has 
been decided yet, and video support is still a considerable way off in 
the future.
