hi ;-) i had the same problems like you, the filters can't be named,=20 changing is possible by defining just a new filter - eventually with=20 a non-search ;-), for deleting it. as far as i can see now the filters are stored within a database, not=20 the whole program the "all fields" setting is a new, not editable setting, probably=20 there are problems with the db-tools which will add a new "all=20 fields" view, or there are problems during conversion from the old=20 databases all in all there are some improvements possible, but nevertheless its=20 a great program - go on tom dyas and marc chalain so long, ciao hermann -----Original Message----- From: Jesper J=F8rgensen [SMTP:j.j...@ge...] Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 8:48 PM To: pil...@li... Subject: [pilot-db-list] DB 0.3.3 filters Thanks for a great palm-program. I just upgraded to the new 0.3.3=20 version and see that filters are now available. That is a very good idea. However, I=20 have 3 problems with them (and don't find any information on them in the manual): 1. How do I name a filter such that I can remember what they do (mine=20 stay named "filter 1", "filter 2" ...? 2. How do I change a filter, e.g. if I mistyped the searcg string? 3. How do I delete a filter that I don't need anymore? B.T.W. are filters by-database or global over all databases? Another question: After upgrading all my databases suddenly have two=20 list views called "All Fields", but only one appears in the "edit list views"=20 dialog. Is that because I have changed column widths prior to the upgrade? How do I get rid=20 of the unwanted view? << File: ATT00000.html >> |

I've had the same problem, I have a feature request in that I think covers these issues. If you go to sf you can review it to see if you'd like to add anything. You told about a feature request not a problem. I'm sorry but i must choose what i will implement. I cannot implement everything. For the 0.3.3 i didn't complete the filter implementation, and when you think something is easy to do, it's not always true. Named a filter wonder a lot of modifications in the main code and in the database structure, and a lot of modifications it's a lot of houres of work. For the palm-db-tools which add automaticly the "all fileds" view, i'm sorry but i don't support palm-db-tools, it's always Tom but he do that only for you because he doesn't use PalmOS device now. You should wait that some body write a PC application for Pilot-DB. Salut, Marc. > I've had the same problem, I have a feature request in that I think covers these issues. First of all: I agree that this is a great program. My preferred = database program for the Palm and it does not matter whether the filters work or not. Being a software = programmer myself, I also understand that some seemingly "easy" change might actually be very = hard and time consuming to implement. One of you said that "all-fields" should have something to do with = db-tools. I don't think so: I haven't used these tools. I simply upgraded the Palm device with DB = 0.3.3 and all the databases I had on it at the time of upgrading now got the extra "all fields" = view. Re filters: I have also tried to "redefine" a filter to search for the = null string (by leaving the search field blank), but it doesn't work: the filter still works as I made it the first time. = It seems to me that a filter can only be changed to search for something else being a non-null string. I don't = know how much my opinion can count here, but I would propose to make it possible to delete and = edit a filter as the first thing and then perhaps wait enabling filter naming (given that it takes a long = time to implement). Deleting and editing a filter is hard to miss if you want to use filters at all, = while filter renaming is not as important (in my humble opinion, of course). Thanks for a great program! and thanks for doing all the hard work under = GPL! ;-) /Jesper ----- Oprindelig meddelelse -----=20 Fra: "Chalain Marc" <mar...@vo...> Til: <car...@fi...> Cc: <Pil...@li...> Sendt: 27. november 2001 09:57 Emne: RE: [pilot-db-list] DB 0.3.3 filters You told about a feature request not a problem. I do understand the time contraints. I also understand that this is a feature request. The problem is that unless the filters can be named, at least at some point in the future, having multiple filters is almost meaningless. Carson Carson R. hi 2 all ;-) my filters proposal lead to a lot of answers and reactions, i know that sometimes an seemingly easy to implent feature is sometimes hard to realize, my proposals are only _proposals_ ,for the wish list and not a bug report or anything like else !! Jesper is right, you can't overwrite a filter with a blank searching filter, the old one still exist, but it doesn't matter as long as they can simply been overwritten - it's nearly the same as deleting it marc and tom are doing a great job with DB, i agree whith Jesper : Thanks for a great program! and thanks for doing all the hard work under GPL! ;-) i don't critizise the program or the work they've done !!! i tell only the impressions i have and the things i'm missing most when i work with DB. the aim is to make a big program bigger !!! ;-) so long, a happy DB user ... ciao hermann |
