It outputed an inf file with a line view "newview" which is invalid. I can't know what exactly was the reason - maybe you did not define the view well or there is some other problem. If I delete this line and csv2pdb, pilot-db can open the generated db. -- Didi |

Hello all, I'm having problems with the attached PDB. I originally had it working without the last column. I recreated it using JPilot-DB from a csv where I had added the last column. Since then it has thrown a fatal error everytime I try and open it. I've tried recreating it afresh, reinstalling Pilot-DB, everything I can think of, but it keeps throwing the error. Any ideas? On a side note I've not had much luck editing schema and or records with JPilot-DB. It doesn't seem to accept changes, hence me recreating the db from a csv file. thanks. Jon |

Hi All, I just installed PilotDB v1.1.3 (and also v1.1.2, after uninstalling the other one!) from the sourceforge site onto my Palm Zire 72 and created a new db. One of the fields was of type "Note". Whenever I try to update this note field I am not able to use the on-screen keyboard. In fact when editing the field of type Note, no buttons work other than the (on-screen) Done button or the (hardware) reset button! Even the power button, Menu button, etc don't work. I can, however, enter data using the graffiti area on the palm. When entering a lot of text, I always prefer to use the on-screen keyboard, and in many cases the copy-paste functionality. However I am not able to do both now. Not sure if any one has faced this before; I tried looking into the archives, but did not find anything like this. Any help is appreciated! Kartik |

It's always worked for me, both in the find and in the filter searches. Let me ask an obvious question, you are selecting the correct field from the drop down list, rather than leaving it as "all fields"? Lastly, you may try an alternate approach. You are able to use equations in the find fields as well. So lets say you have a boolean field as field 5. You can search for checked values in field 5 with this: (seq %5 1) Which is to say the string in field five equals the string "1". You'd leave the Seach field in the Find dialog box set to "All Fields" since you're specifying the field in the equation. Anyway, there are lots of useful possibilities for equations in filters. -Craig Bowers |

When I ask DB to find those records in which the boolean field is "1", it displays all records in the DB. The only difference between looking for "yes" or "true" is the the records are sorted by that field: the checked items together and then the unchecked. I want it to show only the checked records. I have a DB with a boolean field and want to 'find' only those records where it is checked. I've tried "Where the value of --- is 'yes'," I've tried 'true'. The only thing that seem to have an effect is looking for where the value is 0 or 1. But that only sorts: it does not isolate the 'checked' items. I don't have any trouble sorting on time- or date-stamp fields in the latest version. I thought perhaps this was an ASCII sort issue, since I have set my date format in Palm-Prefs to YY/MM/DD, which should sort the same ASCII or integer. But it worked fine regardless of date format. I use DB all the time now, and it works fine on my Clie (sigh). The most complicated database I have calculates my gas mileage based on a fuel purchase log (it accumulates non-fill-ups and updates the MPG at fill-ups). Some usability tweaks would be nice, to eliminate some redundant tapping. As for sorting on multiple fields, you can bring up the Sort dialog (command-S), then tap on the leftmost drop-down to "insert-after" to get more than one field showing. Specify the desired sort fields with the right-hand drop-downs. The way I do it is with a Global Script. You may have read that the "(sort 0 1)" directive will sort on field 0 ascending. But you can also say "(sort 0 1 1 1)" to sort first on field 0 ascending, then for records with equal field 0 sort again on field 1 ascending. To resort, just re-execute the global script. twv@ |

After ~30 seconds of opening the database on Tunsten T3 (400Mhz, 60=20 Mb RAM, SD 512Mb (Apacer)) giving: (Error) "Unable to open database". Also, after ~30 seconds of opening the database gives: (Failed) "An=20 error was encountered during the duplicate. No changes have been made.",=20 then Fatal Exeption + button [reset] + soft-reset. I've used pilot-db for several years for several databases of varying sizes and have only good to say about it. It runs nicely on my Tungsten E. A recent bug in the sort functionj was fixed in about a month and didn't damage data. I'd also recommend the DB-Editor program (www.jakewalk.de) for desktop manipulation of databases. You should use the most recent stable release and avoid beta versions if working with valuable data. Not from a first-hand experience, but I can tell you about Gal, who is my brother-in-law, and for whom I did most of the conf work regarding pilot-db. He uses it daily as a todo-list, much wider (in num of cols) than the builtin one and with quite many filters. It was quite slow on an m130, but a few months ago he moved to a tungsten T and he is happy with it. He has around 500 open tasks, and it's quite fast. His main problem(s) is Hebrew-support related, and does not happen on normal English work. It still might be a bug (maybe more than one) in pilot-db, but I did not have time yet to look at it. As far as I know, he never lost data, for around 1.5 years now. But I do push him to backup his data daily, just in case, and also recommend that to you. Good luck, -- Didi |

Hello, I'm thinking about using pilot-db for managing a big part of my important data (in fact I'm quite close to doing it). Has anybody here (best long-term) experiences in "hard" daily usage of pilot-db and can tell me about it? Especially if there was any pilot-db-related loss of data. But if you really want it to be associated with a view, then here's the process. -Create the filter in the filter list (as above). Remember also that filters can use a script notation: Example: (gt (int %34)0). Where %34 is a date field, and that date is greater than 0. This taken from a PDA database where the date field was a Release date, so that unreleased PDA's could be filtered out. -Create a global script from the options menu This can perform sorts and invoke a specific named filter (the one you created above). It would look like: (sort 1 1)(filt FiltName) Essentially- Sort by column one, ascending (0 would be descending), and select the filter named "FiltName". Test it by selecting the Global script in the list and pressing the "Execute" button. -Lastly, create a View, in the Script selector when editing the View, select the Global script you just made. By choosing this view, you now not only select the fields you wish to display and their column widths, but you can sort and filter the records. If there's anything else you can do with a "Global" script, besides sorting and calling filters, I don't think I've seen it mentioned here. Anyway, I use the above extensively and it's quite useful. One example of it's usage is a media database where you configure it for CD's, DVD's, VHS, or books (all using different field types as appropriate - aspect ratio, sound encoding, publisher, genre, First edition, on-loan, status, etc) just by selecting a view. In another database I keep track of target ammunition. One View displays data from Scope sighting correction values, another view displays data to select the best Long range round to use comparing FPS, energy at impact, grouping, drop, etc, another View for medium range target round selection, another View for inventory - showing full and partial boxes - calculating total number of rounds - price per round of each type - and totals in number of rounds and dollars, etc etc. |
