How about InfiniBase or InfiniFile? Or to have a recursive acronym like GNU (GNU is Not Unix), the name could be: DIOS == DIOS Is Open Source Please it even sounds like my last name in a strange way. Tom |

And I love short names :) Frankly said, I think DB is one of the best programm names I have found so far at all. Though this is personal preferrence, of course. Another two cents bite the dust... Actually, I think I like TeeBase best of all - less of an acronymy look. You might want to do a web search or a trademark search on whatever name you come up with, to make sure nobody else is using it. (Hmmm... Come to think of it, I suggest you call it "Office 2000". :-) -j. |

The name can't have Palm in it though since Palm Computing doesn't like that for some reason. My own suggestions: HandFile - too close to HandDBase probably TBase or TFile (or TeeBase)- if I were vain or egotistical, then I could use my initials in the name :) InfoGlove - 'cause it stores info and it fits in your hand like a glove does. (this one may work actually, thoughts?) SuperDB - since I am so super :) (probably in the same vain as TBase) (pun intended) |

ftp://pilot-db.sourceforge.net/pub/pilot-db/dbtest.prc * beaming restored * removed action buttons at bottom of main screen. tap the ugly triangle next to a database to get a popup list with a list of actions. ugly triangle will go away when I have time to code icon support. * read-only mode. popup action list and choose "Open Read-Only". there are still some kinks since to work out ... do not tap checkboxes on the list view, for example ... 0.3.0 is getting closer, just need to clean up the existing cdoe some more to get everything working that isn't |

PalmOS has a set of interfaces called the Data Manager which allows a program in access and manipulate databases on the device. Every program on a Palm uses this interface. In DB 0.2.x, calls to this interface are littered throughout the program. In DB 0.3.x, I've rewritten the code (at the expense of more code) so that calls to the PalmOS Data Manager are isolated in the io.c file. The remainder of the DB source code now has no idea how a database is being stored nor does it care. This allows me to support the legacy format without changing any other code other than io.c. After 0.3.0 is out, it will allow me to write a MobileDB driver so that DB can be used as a frontend to MobileDB databases with no need to convert to DB's native format. One can envision a JFile Pro driver or a ThinkDB driver in the future if I can figure out the file formats ... > Seems like maybe what is needed here is another button on the front page > for rename, just like we currently have open/del/info/beam ... Probably better to put it on the front screen. > I'm still uncertain what the drivers conversion means... Basically take a database that is in one file format and use another "driver" to produce a copy in another file format. So you could convert MobileDB -> DB native for example (if there were a MobileDB driver). More applicable would be DB 0.2.x -> DB or DB -> DB 0.2.x formats (allowing me to make changes to the 0.3.x format during its development without breaking anyone's databases). > > Also, new options on the chooser screen won't fit. You could add rename and duplicate here as well. The problem is that the UI needs some notion of an "active" action that gets applied when you tap the database. The menu bar doesn't convey that notion. And tapping the database first will cause it to open before you get a chance to open the menu. Tom |

Anyone who wants to help just needs to go to http://sourceforge.net/ and make an account. Then they need to tell me what the username of that account is so I can add permissions to edit the Web page. Then to edit the Web pages, you just use ssh (Secure SHell - encrypted telnet basically plus some other stuff) to access pilot-db.sourceforge.net and go into the /home/groups/pilot-db directory where the pages sit. SourceForge is very good hosting site and makes stuff like this pretty simple to setup and use. You do need ssh though. Getting it for UNIX is easy. I need to make some changes to the UI in order to support the new database drivers layer. Basically, when you click "New" from the main screen, I want a dialog to pop up and prompt you for a database name and the driver to use to create the database. Then when you click OK, you are taken to the current design screen minus the Name prompt at the top. Renaming the database would move to the database preferences dialog. I also need some suggestions on how to support converting between different drivers and also creating a data source using the schema of another database. I'm thinking of a "Duplicate" option on the main screen which will pop up a dialog asking for the new name, driver, and how much to copy ("Schema & Data", "Schema"). Can I do better? Also, new options on the chooser screen won't fit. Will it be a problem if I replace the "Open", "Del", "Info", and "Beam" buttons at the bottom of the screen with a popup list which you select an action from and then tap the database title? Icons may also be better but I cannot draw for the life of me. Or an icon next to the database title that you could tap to get list of database specific options? Tom |

ftp://pilot-db.sourceforge.net/pub/pilot-db/dbtest.prc Fixed two crashes from the last test release. Reenabled the list view checkbox support, restoring a previously opened database, and some other stuff. Chooser supports the PalmOS 3.5 private record masking feature (not tested though since I don't have 3.5). And the "info" dialog shows the database driver name. Tom |
