[pilot-db-list] Concatenate 2 fields?

I want to create a field which is the result of concatenating 2 existing fields.  However, when I try to do this using a calculated field, the resulting field only shows the first 3 characters of the result.
e.g.

Field0 Pref      String
Field1 Index     String
Field3 Locator   Calculated        script: (cat %0 %1)

When Pref=CD and Index=1001, Locator displays:            CD1:
and not CD1001.
Whatever values I put in Pref and Index, I only ever get 3 characters in the calculated field.
Does anyone know what is going wrong here?
(BTW I'm using DB v.1.1.0B on a Palm IIIxe.)
