Perhaps the best thing to do is to not use the list type - or at least not
sort on it.

Instead, create a numeric field at the end of the record that indicates a
sequence number.

I have a similar need - I have databases of gaming cards (think Magic
the gathering, etc.) .  There are multiple groupings of cards in one database
- within each grouping there are numeric sequences.  I'd love to be able
to sort by various fields, then tell DB to return to an original 
order not based on sorting.
