[Gaim-i18n] Norwegian translation update

I was advised to post to this list, so that's what i am doing.

I am currently working on the norwegian translation .po file found in
cvs (not using a web based tool, but kbabel):

cvs -z3 -d ':pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/gaim' login
(hit enter, there is no password)
cvs -z3 -d ':pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/gaim' co -r \
oldstatus gaim

(what does oldstatus mean here? why not head? which version is this?)

And i am doing fine, has a good number of strings translated already.
But when i save, i get an error message:

msgfmt detected a header syntax error!
Output of "msgfmt --statistics":
/home/kyrre/Programering/translations/gaim/po/no.po:15: invalid nplurals

Please edit the file again!

The header reads like this:

all the 1.x releases are from oldstatus.  head will be 2.0.0, but is 
not nearly releasable yet. We will have an extended freeze when we 
start to think about releasing it.

This should be:
"Plural-Forms: nplurals=2; plural=n != 1;\n"

Gaim 1.1.  Gaim 2.0 is in the works on HEAD, but we don't know yet
when it will be released (and strings probably change frequently, so
there's no sense in updating translation all the time).=20

Btw, I find it much easier to grab POT file from:

Yes, I stumbled over this one as well, and it does vary, sometimes=20
wildly between languages. For Vietnamese, for example, it's

since we have no plural forms in that sense.

This is the sort of thing we need a central internationalization=20
resource for: each language with its own page(s), in both English and=20
the native language, explaining all these things that we seem to have=20
to learn by trial and error, mostly error.

I've found other localizers enormously helpful: we do help each other=20
very effectively, but we're asking and answering the same questions=20
over and over. Having some central resource, which would hook the=20
search engines, would get any new localizer off to a much easier, and=20
effective start.

So far, the best resources I've seen are the Translation Project at the=20=

University of Montr=C3=A9al:

So why don't we start by using the Wiki for general info (like .po=20
headers, file formats, TM, contact links and addresses and other=20
resources) and create separate pages for projects and teams?

It would save a lot of repetitive frustration and sorting out, and, I=20
firmly believe, attract more translators, who are currently put off by=20=

the fragmented nature of the arena and the complex and largely=20
unsupported nature of the task.

For example, for Chinese, *theoretically* it should also be

	"Plural-Forms: nplurals=1; plural=0\n"

since it is generally considered that we do not have plural forms.
However, I had to revert it to

	"Plural-Forms: nplurals=2; plural=n != 1;\n"

because there are plural strings in gaim that refer to, e.g.,
"it" vs "they", and we do distinguish between "it" and "they".
So, even though nouns do not have plural forms, we have to use
plurals because pronouns have plural forms.

So these things sometimes can get a bit tricky...

I suspect that Vietnamese (or any language for that matter) would
also distinguish between "it" and "they"; if that is the case you
might also have to revert to nplurals=2 :-/

I understand what you're saying, and pronouns are in fact our biggest=20
growth industry. :D

But fortunately, we have a sneaky way of getting around the "it"/"they"=20=

situation, so so far, so good. Also, in general expressions like the=20
strings in computing programs, we try to avoid pronouns completely,=20
because it's not a personal situation, if that makes sense. We cover=20
the other bases and leave plurality largely to be deduced from added=20
context.
