I've got a few ideas on how I think the Gaim 2.0.0-beta1 UI could be improv=
* Menu reorganisation *
Maybe a layout similar to the following...
Send Message, Join a Chat, Logs,
Buddy Pounces, <seperator>,
Add Buddy, Add Group, Add Chat,
Sort buddies menu, Show offline buddies,
Show Empty Groups, Show Buddy details,
Show Status Box, Mute sounds
In the Accounts menu, change the Add/Edit button to Manage and include
a seperate Add option at the top, which takes you directly to the add
I've removed the file transfers menu, since I thought it would be a
good idea to try and change the file transfers so that they don't
require a seperate window. Most people only perform 1 or 2 file
transfers at once and it'd probably be easier if it was shown inside
the chat window itself (perhaps similar to as it is in Windows
I've also removed a few more of the items, such as the Buddy Info
button, since they're usually accessed through right click.
The status box introduced in gaim-2.0.0 has recieved a lot of negative
feedback. I think it's a step in the right direction, but maybe it
should be hidden by default, since most people probably just want to
change their overall status... so I put a "Show Status Box" menu item
to hide/show this box.
I think that the Buddy log and System log interfaces should be
combined and improved. Currently they're quite hard to use, but I've
not really had time to think about how they can be improved.
* Less intrusive *
One of the most annoying things about gaim currently is the way it
pops up little dialog boxes for things like new mail and requesting
authorisation. Perhaps this should be done a little differently, like
in this quick hack: http://htsc01.b3ta.org/mockup.png
There would need to be some sort of text wrapping or messages would
need to be very concise.
Thanks to all involved in the development of this great IM client,
your work is very much appreciated :)
