Does this affect any packets being sent, or haven't we gotten to the
point of sending packets on the new protocol?

It effects them in the sense they contain the version number.
Other than that, not really. We don't currently send any new packets when
using the new version. We might send a couple of new key/value pairs, but I
don't think those could be triggered while using the old version.
(specificly I'm refering to the protocol indicator in IMs).
