I think Google is a good special case. I use MSN all the time, but I would probably log into Google Talk if it was a snap. There's only so much you can care about, and I don't need to know that Jabber and Google Talk are the same thing or aren't. I only need to instant message, so I can get around to more important work. You can see how popular Gmail is, so Google Talk is probably going to become just as popular in time.
