Initial Comment:
Could someone bang out a telnet protocol plugin for GAIM?  
Basically I'd like to use it to connect to and monitor 
multiple MUDs (Since I use GAIM for everything else, why 
not, eh?)

I'd like it too (found this thread looking for one). It
would fit in fairly well, I think. Although yeah colouring
could be fun (don't most MUD's assume yout telnet client has
a black background?)

I wouldn't really think anything like triggers or alias'
would be needed, since it'd be mostly for "want to check on
MUD from work" (at least for me!)

Don't have time to take it on, unfortunately.

I know I'd probably use it once or twice and I know several people who'd 
use it regularly. 
 
Heck, I'd write it myself if I wasn't already backlogged until hell freezes

If you just need a basic text protocol, this is probably
pretty simple. But, most MUDs I've used have a lot of ANSI
codes to format and color the text, and I'm guessing that'd
be less trivial to implement, although there's probably a
library that does it. 

It might be an interesting exercise, maybe I'll try it one
day when I'm bored.

I think the gaim people don't really like the idea of using
gaim for something that's not instant messaging or chat,
though I suppose MUDs are a kind of extra complicated chat
room ;-) 
(I would like this too, but it's probably not going to happen)
