Hello everybody....I have recently moved from MSN Messenger to Gaim. A friend in msn send me emotions in our chat, does anyone know how can I add these emotions to my Gaim? I will appreciate your help. Thanks a lot in advance.

As far as I'm aware, Gaim doesn't currently support receiving and using custom emoticons over MSN (or any of the IM services).

gaim does support receiving custom smileys, but does not support sending them and likely will not as I believe there are patent/license issues in the way of that.

Thanks a lot Haibara  and Etan for the useful info. I only hope Gaim will resolve this
issue and users can use custom emotions over msn as freely as possible. I hate patents >:o
      Regards

u r able to add/delete smileys at will, it does involve u edtiing a text file (easy) and pasting the smileys to the same folder, let me try to break it down :-)
      1 download this theme:
      http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1550931&group_id=235&atid=746976
the download link is at the end of then page
or one that has all smiley for all protocols
      2 uncompess the file
      3 paste it into ........\application data\.gaim\smiley\
4 find the themes file, open it in a text editor
5 scroll down the theme file to [MSN] after that there is list of msn smileys, the pics filenames on left and the text/s that prints the pics on right, just add ur own custom smileys where u want them, paste ur smileys in same folder as the theme file, and save the theme file. u obviouly have to get ur friends smileys first
      for example:
      [MSN]
      monkey7.gif                _monkey

will add a monkey gif every time i write _monkey in using MSN account
it is really easy, i use the same smileys for each protocol using [default]

Yes, that works just fine but is local only. That is any smileys you add in your smiley theme will show up for *you only* and not for your friend.

i'v never used msn messenger, so i was assuming it would let u add local smileys too, as long as one uses the same text for new smileys they would appear on both ends i thought. but if u cant add local smileys in msn, it would be impossible, with patent issues descibed above.
but then u could set up custom smileys with another msn user, then send the smileys to gaim users, that would work, wouldnt it :-)

If you are lacking emotions, you may want to see a therapist.

nice to see u have a sense of humour Sean :-))
but it doesnt suprise me that ppl add custom smiley to msn, the msn ones rnt that great :-) i use animated yahoo ones on all protocls, plus lots of other ones i'v stolen from dark corners of the internet :-))

So, who owns the patent, and what does it cover?
For instance, don't happen to converse with ppl via MSN,
      only AIM and Jabber.
Am I not seeing their emoticons, only my local ones?
      Probably.
Does this mean that, e.g. Jabber could not pass emoticons using a different protocol,
      not covered by the patent?

Micro$oft owns the patent, of course. You can read it here:
      http://www.freepatentsonline.com/20050156873.html
It's one of those annoying patents that make extremely broad claims as well as specific ones. Presumably that's becuase they know the broad claims aren't likely to stand up if it ever went to court, but they want to discourage anyone from trying it anyway. I don't doubt someone who was knowegable in both law and computing could figure out a way to accomplish roughly the same thing without violating the patent though.
