Greetings all,
Read some of the posts regarding Windows Live & Gaim but couldn't see how they totally relate to my case. I'm a little confuse about this new MSN service, what it replace and how Gaim is dealing with it.
BASICS (what I understand, please correct me where I'm wrong)
Windows Live ID:
- Allows you access to MSN networks (IM, Hotmail, Live.com, MSN, etc...) with one ID,
- Is some sort of a replacement for passport and presents itself as an All ID solution for Microsoft stuff and more,
- Allows you to use YOUR OWN email address (not a MSN, Hotmail or Live.com email address) and make use of it as a Windows Live ID,
- Allows you to connect to Yahoo IM network just like MSN messenger allowed you to do previously.
Now what is still unclear to me regarding Gaim VS Windows Live ID:
- Does Windows Live ID have a different set of protocols (what are they)?
- What are the main differences between MSN messenger protocols and WinLive ID (if any)?
- Does Gaim support WinLive ID or do we need to tweak stuff in order to connect properly?
- What are the known issues that we must know/consider (if any)?
I use Gaim 2.0 (beta 5 portable) on WinXP pro SP2. Everything is working fine except that since I got myself an WinLive ID (under my own email address), I'm unable to access the MSN IM network.
Dearly hope someone can enlighten me about this topic.
Cheers,
C.E. Paquin

I was having problems and I had heard Live was a different protocol.
I got it working, I was typing the password wrong. :-(
A LiveID does work in gaim.
I have no idea if it's a new protocol. :-)

Problem solved. Still it would be interesting to know if Windows Live stuff brings new protocols or difference to the table.
