I have a problem getting the msn client to connect. I'm currently behind a proxy at my school, aim and icq connect through pidgin just fine, and using the official windows live messenger client I can connect, I just can't connect to msn through pidgin. I have the proxy settings correct, I only mentioned the proxy because I don't know if it's part of the problem or not. Anyway, the problem is as follows:
About half the time the account is enabled in pidgin, it is unable to connect, and it gives the following error message: "Connection error from Notification server:
Writing error"
Then, when it is able to connect, about half the messages I try to send will not go through and I get the following error message: "Message could not be sent because a connection error occurred"
Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I might fix it? If you need more information let me know. Thanks
Jayre

Could be an issue with what ports are open on the proxy. Proxies that are used to block access generally block all ports and provide specific exceptions. Try setting MSN to use port 443, and see if that works.
Can you contact your school's IT help desk? If you're allowed to use MSN at school, they should be able to tell you how to setup Pidgin to connect.

Port 443 gives the same error. I have a friend user pidgin and msn behind the same proxy and it works fine, I just can't find any differences between our settings. She's using the default 1863 port for msn. It's worked for me in the past, I just can't figure out what's different now. And the official client does connect fine. I don't think it's a port problem, but I really can't tell what else it could be.
As a side note, my aim and icq are on port 443 (and work fine) because 5190 is blocked.

This is a ticket http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/2638.
Although there are more than 30 comments on this ticket, from some reason its still marked minor and not scheduled to be fixed in any milestone.
PLEASE make it major and fix it ASAP. It prevents from all users behind corporate firewall to use Pidgin for MSN accounts. It will make majority of users to migrate from pidgin to other IM clients..

Also I suppose I should say, this problem was occurring while I was using 2.0.2, and it is still occurring while I'm using 2.1.1 now.

Maybe a better question to ask is what is the Writing error? That's the error I'm getting when msn gets disconnected. Anyone know?
You shoudl try to use it in firefox, maybe the internet explorer is the thing that is stopping you from completely connecting you.
