Just wondering if anyone knows what Pidgin does not offer a .deb package from there website. One would think that with Ubuntu being so popular and now with Dell shipping PC's with it that they would offer it as a option to download. Yes I know one can compile the source and have it, or wait till someone creates a .deb package or if I knew how I could create a .deb package. But being new to linux and Pidgin, it would be nice if there was a .deb package on the site. Just some food for thought. As I await getdeb.net to post a package.

Because it is the distributions job to make packages and not ours. The only reason we offer rpm packages is because one of the developers is familiar with the process and does so. Debian is almost always on top of updating their packages as are a handful of other distributions the fact that Ubuntu isn't is something I consider a failing on their part and a reason for me not to use the distribution. And no, third-party packages are not a good solution.

u can get debs from http://www.getdeb.net , install the dependencies using synaptic or normal way. i'm pretty sure in next ubuntu version pidgin will be in normal repos. the only reason u cant install pidgin from the normal repos is because of the unexpected name change from gaim to pidgin. next version of ubuntu will be out this month, so u can wait for that, or download and double click on debs from getdeb for 7.04 .

i tried alien -c with another rpm package, and it worked, it produces a deb which u can install like normal, u might have to sudo alien -c rpmpackage.rpm i think. it worked for me before, never tried it with pidgin, so dont blame me if it doesnt work :-))
