I just tried gaim, and it installed and ran fine, but it never opens any windows at all and has no user interface whatsoever.  All I can do with it is kill it with task manager and uninstall it.  This is on Windows XP Pro on a fairly vanilla HP system.  What am I doing wrong?  There appears to be no manual in spite of a well laid out web site and it's obviously popular.  I've searched FAQs to no avail.  Any suggestions?

Never mind.  Release 1.5.0 doesn't work at all, but the new beta release does, so I'll use that.  I don't usually like to start with a beta release, but that's all that works, so that's where I'll start.

You have cygwin in your path, that's your problem. The most recent beta works around that issue which is why it works for you. Remove cygwin from your path (or anything that might use it, like WinAVR) and the older versions of gaim will work as well.
