Gaim suddenly stopped working

    Mr Green Genes - 2006-08-15

I've been using Gaim in Windows XP for at least a year now without any problems . . . until today, when I booted up to an error message saying that Gaim "has encountered a problem and needs to close".  Gaim actually does start for a few seconds, as I can see the buddy list trying to connect, but then it crashes.  I'm using version 2.0 Beta 3, and have been for quite some time.

I have not installed any new programs recently or changed any system settings.  The only 'interesting' event that remotely correlates with this phenomenon is that Avast anti-virus updated itself (to a new program version) one or two sessions before this happened.  Temporarily disabling Avast's 'On-Access Protection' has had no effect.

I tried reinstalling Gaim (though without manually removing it first) but that also has not helped.

Does anybody have any suggestions about where I should start in solving this problem?

    Thanks.

try to deactive the MSN account, then it will work. I install another client for msn until this is fixed. I think those idots at Microsoft have changed something in MSN. Can they ever do anything right? ;)

Thanks.  I just noticed all the other posts about MSN ... I should have read them first.

So where does that leave us?  Could this kind of thing take a long time to fix?

This bug is windows specific and is will be fixed in the next release (and in fact is fixed in today's version of the code).

What could take some time (I have no idea how much) is the next release.

Worked for me also.   Note. change the extension of the old DLL if you want to keep it in the folder.

      Thanks! I'm back on GAIM!!!

It should be nice to have a 2.0 beta 4 to fix this problem.

      Regards,

      Ari

I'm still crashing, even with the rebuilt libmsn.dll (on 2.0.0b3 on XP).  :-(

i'm still crashing too.  with the new dll, i get:

"The procedure entry point gaim_account_get_presence could not be located in the dynamic link library gaim.dll <ok>"

the program launches and i try to logon to msn and get a missing protocol message, and that account shows up as an 'unknown' account type.

Recently when I turn my PC on...and turn GAim on.. I am getting the same "Gaim has encountered a problem and needs to close" message. The only thing that has worked so far is turning my Firefox browser on and then after a few minutes I can actually get gaim to work. THis just started the other day. Sad thing is I told a friend about GAim.. and she installed it and all it did was crash. So she got digusted and uninstalled it. I thought I saw here that this has to do with a change in MSN messenger (don't we LOVE Microsoft???)? I guess I will have to try turning msn off and see if that helps. Since I am not a prgramer and use this with XP I am hesitant to fiddle with DLL's. Sure hope they come up with a new version and a fix soon. This has been frustrating.....
