I get this error in 2.0 beta 3 when trying to connect to GTalk.
I tried beta 5 before, but it failed with a similar error (though I don't remember the exact message). I failed back to beta 3 after I read that this worked for another user that experienced similar errors with beta 5.
Yes, all the settings are correct, and triple-checked.

Used to happen to me, but I think upgrading to some version or doing a clean install fixed it. Maybe try erasing the gaim profile folder. Looking at the SVN changelogs, I'd say they've been adding a ton of stuff for google talk specific connectivity, which might solve your problems.

Sorry for my stupidity, it was a "firewall". It was PeerGuardian 2.
Depending on what block lists you have, talk.google.com's ip (66.102.11.125) may be blocked. (You can create a custom list to allow this IP).

Now I fell back to 1.5.0 and neither does this version work with GTalk, and before someone brings this up again, no, I have NO firewall.

What does the Debug Window say when you try to connect?
