I left gaim on when I had to go out and when I came back, it's using about 296 megs of memory. Is this related to the new GTK or is this a problem with gaim itself? I want to know which one needs to get reverted.

I just remoted into my PC at the office and noticed that gaim does not appear to be using a crazy amount of memory. As a precaution, I just removed all of my old plugins and updated to the guifications plugins for beta 6 so we shall see how this goes. It might have just been an old plugin causing trouble.
Anyone else have this problem though?

On WinXP, gaim is using 28MB, so I guess no. Guifications doesn't seem to make a difference, I think they just recompiled it against beta 6 instead of 5.

On both my Windows XP machines at home, Gaim is shooting up in memory usage for some reason. I just disabled all of the plugins and it's somewhere around 160mb of memory since my first post in this thread.
What I just did is I turned off my firewall, anti-virus, and reverted to the Windows Classic theme to see if the problem re-occurs.

I figured out how to reproduce it on my home PCs... basically, just open up an AIM chat window and the memory starts shooting up. I'm going to try blowing away my gaim and gtk installation on both machines since it is basically the same on both of them and then I'll do a clean install and report back.

Running with no plugins at all, on a fresh install of windows XP and a fresh install of gaim with the GTK+, on two seperate machines, opening an AIM window causes memory to slowly increase in roughly 40k increments. I don't get it. I'll keep messing with things, but something definitely isn't right here.

Remember this is on Windows I'm having the issue. I just dumped my old chat log files last night to another location and rebooted gaim. When I did so, my memory usage went down to like 3mb at idle. It's weird though, and I still can't pinpoint the exact sequence of events to reproduce it. Who knows, maybe something weird was happening with logging or something. I'll keep updating.
I'd like to report it as a bug or something but if it's something unique to me, I'm not really sure what to do. That's why I guess I'll just keep updating this thread with the stuff I'm trying.

Datallah, I'll try that tonight. I use tabs on the left hand side of the window. I've been racking my brains trying to figure out what is wrong with this thing. I'll report back tonight.

Ok, I've been running with the tabs on top and a bunch of plugins running and there is no excessive memory usage anymore.
Soooo.... any idea on when this bug is going to get fixed? This is a pretty big deal if you ask me... when I'm dealing with sametime users, having the names across the top is confusing.

Are you using Tab placement somewhere other than on top?
If so, put the tabs on top and see if that fixes the excessive memory usage.

Daniel, you want to say it is not recomended to use other tab placement then on top?!? In this case, why to have this possibility at all?

Just a quick update... I've been running with the tabs on top for the past few days now and it has been working perfectly. Should I open a bug for this or is there already one open for it?

I can see the same behaviour (I'm using win XP SP2 english US): after setting the tab bar to appear at the bottom, the memory size increases (plus there are graphical artifacts in the tab bar, like parts of icons).
Just move the chat window to see the memory consumption increase.
I could not find this bug in the tracker, so I would say go ahead and submit it.
thanks,
kenden

For me, opening an AIM window (do u mean chat room) only increases RAM usage by 4MB. Could be a stray plugin that's not compatible with beta 6.

Did some more testing and it appears to be related to the WinGaim Options plugin that comes with Gaim. I'll do some more testing and report back.
At me each open window of a chat increases used memory by 25 mbyte.

Up to 166 megs here :-/
Doesn't seem to be related to any plugin..hmm..

I think he's saying there's a possible bug with tab placement other than top. Having them on the left has worked fine in every other build.

The bug has already been reported a number of times and I filed the following GTK+ bug for it:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=403470
The artifacts that appear when the the tab placement is on the bottom is a different issue (which has also been reported):
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=399253
Alright cool. I wasn't sure if this was a bug with GAIM or a problem with GTK+.
