Right now, I'm running Gaim 1.5. I want to upgrade to Pidgin 2.0 because my MSN accounts have caused Gaim to crash on startup since last August.

Will Pidgin overwrite Gaim, or can they run side by side if I install Pidgin to a different folder? I'd like to keep my current version for a bit to see if Pidgin is stable enough to run, as I see it is still technically in beta.

If it's relevant, I'm using Win98 SE. Old, but I can't afford anything better at the moment.

Pidgin is no longer in beta, it installs separately so will leave gaim alone, it may or may not run on Windows 98 and certainly will not with the bundled GTK+ (I believe you would need 2.6.10 or some similar version for Windows 98).

If I install the separate GTK first, will Pidgin use that, or will it try to install its bundled version?

Just download the one without the GTK+ or if you can't get that for some reason say "no" when it asks to install the latest GTK+

You can download a version that does not have GTK bundled. (Pidgin-nogtk)

When I was on the download page (on the main site), I only saw one download for Pidgin available for Windows. However, I will just decline the GTK when it offers to install it.

I checked my GTK and am at 2.6.10 rev A. Is this recent enough? Also, how much RAM is needed to run Pidgin? I have 64 MB. Yes, very very low, but I'm a pauper.

Can't say I know how much RAM is needed (I haven't even checked the processes with Pidgin running), but one of the systems I'm running Pidgin 2.0b7 on (yeah, haven't gotten around to upgrading yet, though I have both GTK (as the other system I'm running it on is an XP system) and non-GTK installers) is a Win98 Gold/First Edition system with only 64MB of RAM, and it seems to work okay, even with other things running in the background... including my web browser.

Yes, you have the highest version of GTK+ that can be run with Win9X/ME.

That's almost exactly what I'm on, except it's SE. I'm running Pidgin right now and it seems alright. It inherited all my old Gaim settings (except buddy icons which I had to manually set up), my buddy groups, away messages, etc. I think I still have Gaim though because the Gaim icon is still on my QuickLaunch bar.

Does Pidgin have the option to disable the flashing icon in the tray when messages are received during away? I heard it did, but I can't find it in the settings.

        Thanks for any help again.

Yes, you should still have your Gaim install largely intact.  (The Pidgin install may or may not have moved files and folders out of your Gaim profile and program directories, however.)  If you're sure you're not going to use that version of Gaim anymore, you can safely uninstall it (and delete the .gaim profile directory (on Win9X/ME, should be under Windows/Application Data/)).  That should also take care of the QuickLaunch icon.  :)

      Re: the tray icon

If you right-click on the tray icon, is "Blink on new message" checked?

btw, there's also an unofficial patch for the libmsn.dll available, so you could use v1.5 without crashing. There should be link somewehere in this forum.
