First of all I'd like to say I'm quite happy with what the new status selector ( the one in beta 4) can do and you guys have done a good job. Still there's one thing I don't quite like and that's how you have to select your status. I think it's a bit too uncomfortable and that slector is kinda big. Something similar with the Yahoo client or maybe even Kopete ( I'm a KDE user but I don't really like it ) would be nice.
Otherwise GAIM is turning out quite nicely and what I wanted to have it do is being done whithout even having to ask. The thing I look forward to now is the audio & video beyond version 2.

Assuming we know what the official Yahoo! client and/or Kopete look like/do is a mistake, if you can get or find screenshots that would be much more helpful. Also realize that protocol specific clients tend to make bad "role-models" because they don't have to deal with many of the issues a multi-protocol client does.
Also, the status selector is not that big (if you haven't tried the appears-as-list workaround listed in the example gtkrc file found in the FAQ you should, it and a couple other settings cut the size down a noticable amount).

I will try and see. As I said it's OK and works fine but I just think there's room for improvement in the way it looks ( not the way it works ) . I'll do some researching and think about how it could be done and get back to you with some screenshots and examples. I'll also take into account the fact that it has to work on all the protocols gaim supports. Thanks.

It just occured to me. What if in the left we have just the smilies for selecting the status or maybe a bit of text . Then in the center we can have select list for setting the status message independantly , for whatever type of status was chosen ( invisible , online , away ) and in the right , like we have now the global buddy icon selector.
This would allow people to easily select their status , then they can select a status message which will remain shown there and then they can select the buddy icon. Please at least consider this and tell me what you think.
