Hello:

I've searched extensively for a solution to this, but I don't seem to see any answers.

Every time I send an IM via ICQ, the recipient sees my text surrounded by and .

and also appear in their responses to me.

As far as I can tell, this only affects ICQ.

Is there any way to turn this off?

Thanks!
Blue

What plugins do you have loaded? Does hitting ctrl-r in the convesation window 'fix' it for that message?

Etan:

Thanks for your reply.

I am using the Windows version of 2.4.1 on Windows XP Pro. Windows is patched and up to date.
I haven't tried any plugins. There are a number of them listed in the Plugins Window, but none are Enabled.

Thanks again,

Etan:

Doh, sorry, hit send too soon.

Ctrl-R doesn't seem to do anything. ICQ users report that my IMs have surrounding my text, and their responses look the same to me.

I tried Ctrl-R before typing a message and after typing a message but before sending, but neither seemed to clear the font tags.

Thanks,
Blue

I'm assuming if you send the message to yourself it comes through correctly? Do your messages look wrong to all of your buddies or just some of them? If just some of them do those buddies have a particular ICQ client in common? If you aren't using any pidgin plugins and you are *seeing* incoming messages incorrectly I'm not sure how that could be pidgin's fault and it sounds like it is something broken in whatever client your buddy/buddies is/are using. If you are familiar with tools like wireshark (or some other network traffic watcher) you can try running one of them and seeing what the actual network traffic you send and out receive is, that might shed some light on this.

Etan:

Nope, I haven't tried sending messages to myself via ICQ since most of my buddies are right here in the office, and I can ask them to assist.

Yeah, all reporting buddies have the same client: Trillian.

I'm evaluating Pidgin possibly to replace Trillian, and most folks here use ICQ/Trillian.

I would have to bring my systems folk in to do sniffing, so let me see if I can attack the lower-hanging fruit at Trillian. Maybe it's a setting there?

I'll update the thread with any new information I find.

Thanks again for your leads,
Blue

Trillian might have a 'rich text formatting' option that may be relevant (but won't by itself solve the problem, unless they have it *on* and that is causing the problem). You shouldn't need a network or systems admin to do network monitoring on just your machine (unless you don't know how to do it or policy says you aren't allowed to). It might be worth trying to see if having one of your coworkers has the same problem if they try pidgin and whether messaging between the two of you works correctly in that case. Just to cover some more bases.

Hello, everybody:

I was able to fix this by disabling ZoneAlarm.

We use CheckPoint Integrity Client, which is, I believe, specially engineered to be a really stupid and annoying flavor of ZA.

Once I got permission to get rid of ZoneAlarm, Pidgin behaved correctly.

Thanks for your help!
