    Hi everyone

I am new to Gaim - I usually use Trillian. However I'm very interested in encrypted IM, and have seen that Off The Record is one of the best. I'm trying out Gaim because OTR works well with it, and because I want to support open source.

The one problem I have so far is that I cannot see an option to specify the location of conversation logs/history. I operate an encryption drive using Truecrypt. With Trillian, I was able to specify that I wanted my logs written to that encrypted drive.

Is there a way of doing this with Gaim?

(I also have the same problem with Skype)

    thanks

    Monica

Just bumping this up. I'm still not sure how to change the location of conversation logs, or whether it can be done. If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it.

      thanks

I'm assuming that this is on Windows, in which case, you can change the location of all your settings according to the instructions here: http://gaim.sf.net/win32/#faq

Yes I'm using WinXP. Thanks for the reply. The relevant part in the FAQ says:

"Where are my Gaim settings and data (including logs) saved? - As of 0.69, shfolder.dll is used to determine the location for a user's app data. On Windows ME this will be something like C:\WINDOWS\Profiles\username and on Win 2k/XP C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data. This can be overridden by setting the GAIMHOME environmental variable (as of v1.1.0). Logs are stored in this directory in a subdirectory called "logs.""

So it seems that I need to know how to 'set the GAIMHOME environmental variable'. Does anyone know what this means?

Sorry if my question is obvious!

Googling "windows environment variable" turns this up: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310519

Thanks for your help Daniel. I just didn't think I needed to go into Windows proper to change it, but it worked - cheers!

And I now have OTR working too. What an awesome program :)
