Does anyone know how to override the "PURPLEHOME environment variable"?

According to the Pidgin FAQs, setting this variable can change the location of the user settings directory. For details, see this link:

For my personal use.  It would be helpful to have instructions written for a newbie (me).

I had some issues when trying to figure it out so thought I'd post what I think would actually work.  I use XP.

Shut down Pidgin and copy the .purple directory from C:\Documents and Settings\my.user.name\Application Data to C:\A\B\C (new directory).  Rename the old directory in App Data to something else like x.purple.

Add a new user variable as described here: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/environment_variables.mspx?mfr=true called PURPLEHOME and point it to C:\A\B\C.

Restart Pidgin.  If everything works ok, you should be able to delete the old .purple directory from App Data.

My errors when not completing the steps in the order above:
        1. When I started Pidgin, it asked me to configure accounts, saying it didn't have any information about them.  Copying directories and repeating steps above fixed that.
        2. Preferences changed (logging was disabled, tray settings), even after copying the directory as above.  I just reset them.

Thanks so much. This worked well for me once I set the Environment Variable correctly. For others trying to change the directory location, just note that if your new directory is:

      D:\Some Folder\Some SubFolder\.purple

      Set the Environment Variable to:

      D:\Some Folder\Some SubFolder
