Hi, got a few questions (sorry, there was not enough space in the subject field to mention all of them):
How can I modify the vertical spacing between entries in the buddy list? I want to decrease it to the value of v1.5...
It would also be nice to set up that sounds (eg. when receiving a msg) are played when "away" on icq, but not when "not available". Or even better: When user "Bob" sends a message, a sound is played. But not when user "Alice" does ;) But the prefs.xml contains only an integer variable what represents the selected entry of the sound config dialog ("<pref name='while_status' type='int' value='1'/>") :(
Is there a way to show the buttons ("send file", "info", "send", "block", etc) below the text area in the conversation window like in v1.5 (via the "extended preferences" plugin)?
How can I display the connection status? v2.0 seems to have problems connecting to some servers (icq, jabber.. totally randomly) but doesn't show a connection status (or connection progress) dialog. "active" is always checked...
What reminds me of another thing: In v1.5 there was a checkbox next to the "active"-checkbox in the account list: "auto login". How can I set up this in v2.0?
After a strange message box popped up all the time ("Buddy 1 couldn't be added": http://styxxx.de/temp/gaimerror.png (screenshot, german) - which make absolutely no sense to me) I downgraded to v1.5. Now on every start a got the error message "gtkgaim.dll not found" but gaim seems to work fine after that. What is gtkgaim.dll for?
Hope, I didn't ask too stupid questions ;) And sorry for my bad English.
I'm using winXP btw.
greetings,
styxxx

#1 the option moved from preferences to the buddies menu. deselect "show buddy details"
#2 this would require a plugin
#3 this is not possible. The code was not simply disabled, but removed. Everything there is duplicated either by keystroke or by menu item, or both. And any menu item can have a keystroke assigned (or changed if one already exists). Thus the buttons are never necessary. Additionally, their existence confused people. As an example, we regularly had requests for a way to send without clicking the send button.
#4 "enabled" and "disabled" refer to gaim's control of the account, not to a specific state. Gaim knows what state each enabled account should be in (it should be in the global state, unless an exception is defined by you), and what state each enabled account is in. It actively tries to make the two (should and is) match. When it fails, it produces an error in the buddy list. When attempting, it shows "connecting" in the selector.
#5 by default gaim sets each enabled account to whatever state it was in when gaim quit. IF this is not desirable, create a saved state that matches what you want to happen. For some people this will be globally available or invisible, with some exceptions. For others, this will be globally offline with some exceptions. being offline is just another state, as is being invisible. it was not possible to reasonably have accounts start to "away" or "invisible" without a drastic change to the interface. We decided granting that feature request, and clearing up some other flaws and bugs in the process, was worth the learning curve on the new interface.
#6a 2.0.0 beta6 completes the core/ui split that has long been a design goal. Gaim's user-visible interface now links against "libgaim" which provides much of the functionality. In downgrading, you have hit some oddness as a result.
#6b an alternate cause of this might be your plugins. if you have 2.0.0 plugins, 1.5 might well complain about them in that manner
#6c the error you are hitting has to do with icq buddies. Its a known bug.

Is there also a possibility to configure the size of the tabs? In v2.0 they look different to v1.5: http://styxxx.de/temp/gaim/gaim_spacing.png
I'd like a smaller width (eg. like it was in 1.5).
These are probably gtk issues?
#4/#5 I've periodically the problem, that one of the accounts (mostly ICQ) isn't connecting when starting gaim (or at least I think it isn't, cause I can't check the connection status). The state is shown as enabled, but no buddy entries are shown - and also no error messages. Disabling and enabling the account doesn't help. So I've to restart gaim. Then everything works fine.
And another 2 questions:
How can I ignore authorization requests? In v1.5 message box was shown. When closing it (without clicking "accept" or "refuse") the request was ignored.
The height of the text input field is very small. I tried a few things, but it's always at that small size again when opening a new tab. http://styxxx.de/temp/gaim/gaim_input.png
Is it possible to change this value permanently or force gaim to remember the last used value (I would prefer the last)?
Thanks :)

regarding #4/#5... i'd love to hear more about the changes in account states. i think i'm starting to understand what's been done with the "matching" of enabled account states, but i'm still feeling a little blonde on how to most efficiently manage my accounts with respect to the new changes. it would be great if someone could give sort of a basic overview of how to set your default account status, how to tell which account is "active," (i.e., if i have two aim accounts and both are online, and someone sends me an im, how do i know which account they sent it to and which account i'm sending messages from? am i just supposed to be conscious of what my global settings per account are, or is there some sort of visual cue somewhere that i'm missing? or, if i have one account set to default as "available" and the other set to be "offline," how do i make my offline account visible from within the interface of the first logged-in user's buddy list? sorry, that wasn't very coherent, but like i said, feeling blonde...), when to use and not use "enable/disable" versus "available/offline," etc.
thanks for all your wonderful work with the project. on my end, nothing buggy or unstable about the beta so far.

* About setting account states
In Tools > Accounts, the checkbox next or before an account basically means whether an account is allowed to go online upon starting up gaim.
In Tools > Preferences > "Status/Idle" tab, check out the "Status at Startup" section.
If the checkbox is checked, the last online/away etc state is used from the previous session on startup.
If you uncheck the checkbox, you can manually set which online state to use upon startup (includes invisible). This applies to all accounts.
The buddy list window's bottom-most select button's online/away/idle state applies to all accounts. If you want to use a different state for one or another account, click the button and then select "New...". There comes up a new window, where there is an expandable function, which says approximately this (I'm using an Estonian language UI, so it's roughly translated from it): "Use a different state for some account". If you click on this, the window should expand and you can click the checkbox before an account name and then specify the settings there. I haven't used it myself, so feel free to experiment.
* About knowing which account you are using for an IM exchange:
Typically, I only have an msn messenger account that has the most number of active users. I have sorted my contacts as family/friends/work/other acquaintances and every one of my accounts has its own family/friends/work/other acquaintances set, but every set is named differently, such as 1_Family, 2_Friends are so in msn messenger, because this helped me sort accounts inside the msn messenger programs, so that family contacts were the topmost and next in descending order were friends, work and other acquaintances.
But the Google Talk account has it this way: G_Family group may mean family contacts via Google Talk. G_Friends may meas friends' constacts from the same service. And so on and so forth.
In Gaim, my default setting is to show online friends only. This makes it easy to distinguish as to who is online and where from. If someone is online from any two or more services, they usually have different online (screen) names and this what I usually follow. If you have a large number of contacts, you can change their aliases within your Gaim app and you can write the service/account used to the name of the alias (such as "Jenny via Jabber" or "Jenny via Google Talk"). This is possible when you open a context menu when clicking on a specified contact (that is usually done with the right mouse button).
I can also see which are my contacts' avatars/display pictures when first seeing the buddy list after logging in and after that I usually distinguish easily which account someone is sending from (In the case of my contacts, very few people use services other than the .net messenger).
Some protocols also use different means of formatting text. For example, the AIM protocol supports text background colour, while the msn messenger protocol doesn't.
You can also use the Guifications2 plugin to keep account of who's coming online or offline and from which service. The plugin is available from http://gaim.guifications.org/trac/downloads (scroll down until you see the Guifications2 section and there's a downloadable .exe).
