This morning Pidgin was working with Facebook contacts perfectly, I closed it in the afternoon, and now tonight, Pidgin gives me small error (well the text is long) I see some of the people logging in, but I get disconnected right away
Connection problem that's all of a sudden. following from what I said in the title, I can go on facebook fine, so nope no account problem. And it was working this morning, there was a medium amount of updates recently, I use Linux Mint 17.3 : and these updates were available which I installed today and yesterday, let's see, a lot of gstreamer plugin packages, apparmor packages, thunderbird, firefox, flash, git and samba related packages. I don't see what causes the error, I can paste it if needed, I hope it can be hovered over and pasted..yep, I see all those boxes for the most important people (category I made myself) appear as boxes telling me they are there and then "Null value for $.viewer.message_threads.sync_sequence_id" and I can't reconnect.

Same problem here. Suddenly cannot enable Facebook account -- has worked for years without problems except for the occasional disconnect. Now getting the "null value" error message.

Well, what allows us to do this is since the good people who invented purple as a workaround when Facebook stopped offering (they did officially then) XMPP for IM programs. Then they stopped, had to login to fb for about 5-6 months then purple/libpurple came around, maybe it needs an update.

I haven't rebooted since then, I will give that a try, a lot of updates and PPA's added for some versions of programs that are not ready yet in theory for Mint 17.3 (trusty ubuntu repos + mint's own repos which are getting larger and the goal is that someday there will no need to follow ubuntu repos). Anyone had success later? On a different device or a the same one but rebooted?

Ubuntu 16.04, no updates in a week, same thing. I thought it was working this morning around 0845 CST but then Ive received no messages since.
Same problem here, worked yesterday, today it's dead. My guess, and it's just a guess, is that Facebook updated their protocol. I'm on Mint 17.3

Something strange happened here..
As seen in GitHub, it seems caused by Facebook dropping support for ancient versions of Messenger: https://messengerblog.com/general-messenger/update-on-support-for-older-versions-of-messenger-and-facebook-apps/
Fixed in latest purple-facebook lib.
