I have used Pidgin, Trillian and also Meebo all of which I like a lot. Pidgin by any means is the best of them all being open source and even the interface of it I like much more.
It is pretty good in the GUI part as it's very responsive and rich.
But there is one thing I've always wanted / disliked about all of such multi-protocol messengers that are there out there, I haven't yet found one with the particular requirement that I have. I am definitely sure even you people would perhaps agree that it should be within Pidgin as well.
The thing is, I am a frequent user and use multiple accounts in different messenger services, yahoo, jabber, gtalk, msn even icq at times. But the thing that I dislike about the buddy list is that when I connect to multiple accounts, their friend lists get merged!
The groups in each of the accounts get merged and often I find it difficult to organise my budy list and gets confusing. Especially when I want to add / delete people into my buddy list.
I think when we are logged into multiple accounts like I mentioned above, the groups of each of the account should be separated. The groups of a particular account should be sub-grouped to the account name. (Not just protocol, I may use multiple yahoo accounts as well!). I personally feel this task shouldn't be a difficult thing, I don't know why such multi-protocol messengers have them.
What is your opinion regarding my suggestion???
Whether pidgin uses my idea or not, I am going to continue using it anyways, but I sure feel that having such a feature would be good, and in fact to an extent, to me it seems like a better and simpler way of representing the buddy list for the GUI as well. I could be wrong.
I'd like to hear your comments.
PS: Is there a proper forum for pidgin which I dont know about? I couldn't find anything of the sort mentioned on the site, so I am posting here. Hope it doesn't get ignored. At least I should get a reply, positive or negative.

personally i have 10 accounts connected when using pidgin. some are for work and some are for play. several work ones i merge in one group, some contacts for my freelance work i have in another group and my personal ones in a third group.
its been so long since i first started using gaim, so im not sure how this worked out. but as far as i remember different protocols have different default names for groups and with see offline contacts switched on i was able to group them as i wished. when i add a buddy i can simply select which group it sits in.
this to me seems similar to what you want. if im totally missing the point.. please point me in the right direction.

Well I will consider your suggestion as well, though what I want basically is that contacts / groups of one account be under the account as a single node in the buddy list tree.
ok i see what you mean. this is a bit more complicated. i don't know how much! whether it would be a plugin or a patch...
if you don't want to wait for someone to make one you could just make different groups to do this and arrange them in your buddy list. would take some time to setup but it would effectively give you what you want i feel:

eg.)
account1
->group1
->->contact1
->->contact2
->->contact3

.
.
.
account2
->group1
->->contact1
->->contact2
->->contact3

->group2

.
Is it more clear now. I think this shouldn't be so difficult to implement programmatically either. What do you say?
