The new system tray icons in Beta7, basically showing your status as a circle, were quite nice; but the new icons in the official v2.0 release have a white 'message' next to them that makes it look like you permanently have a message waiting.
Any chance of putting back the old beta7 icons, or having an option for them?

I *think* they were changed because they were too similar to tray icons used by other applications (especially the unread message icon). Like you, I thought they were very nice but I doubt we will see them come back.

The new message icon was changed because it appeared to be too close to other applications tray icons. The rest of the icons were changed to include a speech bubble because the icons were thought not to give enough indication as to what application they belonged to. Personally, while I think the system tray icons speech bubble is a little bit large (at least on the available icon) I also think they are better than the beta7 ones were.
You can override the docklet icons from your gtk theme if you so chose, you could also just directly overwrite the icon files (though that would get undone by future pidgin installs).
