i can't quite remember when this feature was removed but it was quite recent. basically the dropdown in the message window where you can select which account you are sending the message from. not sure what happened with that?
an example i encountered today - i clicked a link on a webpage that said 'send im' so it then asks me to select pidgin and then a message window pops up to send to that account. however i have 5 accounts on that protocol - obviously i would like to choose which one i use to send the message. how can i do that without having to copy the id and making a new message window which is pretty cumbersome?

The 'Send As' menu was replaced with the 'Send To' menu for the release of pidgin 2.0.0, which was released 05/03/2007. Not exactly recent.
That being said you are correct we should handle that sort of thing better. Feel free to file a ticket with that request.
