What version of gaim/pidgin? What protocol? What client are your friends that see this using? Are you seeing this message or just being told about it? What plugins do you have loaded?

It's not Pidgin, it's the protocol. Pidgin won't send a message but the protocol will recognize if you close the conversation window. If you chose to activate the buddy status notification plugin, you will receive those messages by yourself whenever a user closes the conversation window.

MSN sends messages when an underlying protocol object is closed, this can mean the window was closed or can mean any number of other things. gaim used to display messages about window closing, it no longer does because they became unreliable, that plugin has nothing to do with this.

That's exactly what I said (or at least what I meant). Pidgin won't send anything and activating that plugin will show the messages again as Pidgin doesn't anymore by itself.

When I close a window, a message is sent:
/me ended the conversation
I find no option to disable that behavior.

pidgin causes the same protocol level closes as it always had and no that plugin will not show conversation closed messages.
only jabber, not msn
Wait, you are seeing window closed messages on jabber?
