Can't save custom smilies

    Silver Fang - 2007-07-22

I downloaded the newest version because I read it has the ability to save right click and save custom smilies. When I do that, however, I get an error message saying, "Unrecognized file type. Defaulting to PNG". When I check the folder to which I saved the custom smiley, it is nowhere to be found, as a PNG or otherwise.

    Please advise.

I had to manually add PNG to the file name before saving it.

This was fixed a little while ago, should show up in the next release

This time, I tried to download an animated GIF, but it would only allow me to save it as a PNG, which of course removed the animation. Please fix this problem in the next version or something.

Saving gifs isn't going to be possible.  GTK+ doesn't have the capability to write out gif files (only to read them) for legal reasons.

Because of that Compuserve copyright thing? I understand the problem.

I do however, think it's ashame that all this copyright and intellectual property stuff puts restrictions like these into place. People should stop being greedy and respect the free flow of information.

OK, since GIFs aren't doable, how about MNG? Moving Network Graphics are supposed to replace GIFs for animated files, but aren't yet widely supported by browsers. Since there are no copyright problems with MNGs, could Pidgin support writing animated files to that format?

I don't know... If it's possible, sure, but I've also heard MNG isn't well-supported or even 'stable' as a format (not set in stone).  Maybe simple uncompressed AVI files could be used, as that could theoretically work cross-platform.  Image sequences, sure.  But then someone would complain about having to piece the files back into an animated GIF.  :)

I heard they're not well supported at all, (though IrfanView supports them). I don't even know if Firefox supports them! Yes indeed, that would be a problem. Well I guess until MNG becomes supported or Unisys stops being greedy, this problem will remain.

      Thanks anyway.

isn't apng the new free animated format http://wiki.mozilla.org/APNG_Specification . if pidgin would support that, life would be much easier since the gif support seems really buggy at the moment.

as for the original question, you can get your friend to send you the gif/s, and add it/them manually to your smiley theme. this isn't difficult to do, there is even a guide at http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/SmileyThemes

He doesn't know where the actual file is. He has Windows Live Messenger and has it as a custom smiley. It doesn't really matter. I found an animated GIF that looked rather like what he had.

Mozilla had support for it at one point (I also remember downloading an extension for the Mozilla Suite that added MNG support).  Supposedly, though, they removed it from Mozilla/FF (in 2004?) because there were some issues/bugs with it.

I tried a few of the 'test pages' that I found from wandering around the MNG homepage, and Firefox only displayed the 'broken image' placeholders for the MNGs.  (I did download the images and test them with IrfanView to make sure they were what they were supposed to be, of course.  (...and not actual broken picture links on older webpages.))
