I am suspecting that gaim opens a conversation with everybody online in the msn-list at the moment you or they log in.
This causes some unwanted behaviour when friends are using amsn. This is because amsn opens a windows the moment somebody starts typing (opens a conversation) in msn.
At school where I only have amsn I get a window for all my gaim-using friends, without them knowing about it. This happens when I log in, or at the moment they do.
I think gaim is mostly at fault here. Though both are using the protocol different than microsoft intended it, which is probably a bad idea.
