That post also mentions the MyStatusBox plugin, which is now part of the Plugin Pack (http://plugins.guifications.org/trac/wiki/mystatusbox ). I haven't tried that one, though. I used to use Account Tabs (http://math.ut.ee/~a30860/gaim/ ), but the latest version was compiled against Gaim 2.0b6, and doesn't work with the latest versions of Pidgin.
Also, I'm not sure if the problem phlegmatic mentions (about changes to (single) account status sometimes being applied globally) is still an issue, so it might be something to keep in mind.

The thread states to go to: Status > New > Use a different status for some accounts.
I have no such option anywhere, or am I missing a plugin?

For the custom status options, either click on the Status button on the bottom of your Buddy List window (the one that mentions your current (global) status), or right-click on the tray icon and go into the "Change Status" submenu. Then, pick "New...". In the window that opens, there should be a toggle for "Use a different status for some accounts".
