The pidgin.im site itself needs a good forum

Not this. Plus there is no link or any mention of it on the main site.

How can we get people to help with the app if no one knows where to go to discuss it? A php forum or similar that has an actual link on the main website would be nice and probably increase productivity.

    Thanks :)

We (the pidgin developers) don't like forums as a general rule and have no desire to run one. We have multiple mailing lists, an irc channel, and an XMPP chat room for use for support purposes (when filing tickets is not the correct action). This forum continues to exist mostly because we haven't bothered turning it off.

I understand developers sticking with mailings lists and other 'dev' tools.
But, it might be helpful for the 'real' people who are starting to use the software to have a place to communicate how they are used to.

Majority of people are still AOL-like, and have no idea what irc, usenet, or mailings lists are. XMPP? Is that something dirty?

By putting up a forum on the main Pidgin site, you might find more usage, greater acceptance, and 'normal' people helping 'normal' people.  Freeing up the developers to not have to answer simple questions.  "Users Helping Users" will only work if the users know where to help users, and it's AOL-easy.

The problem, unfortunately, is that history has shown us *repeatedly* that "users" are very bad at helping other users and furthermore that users seeking help are even worse at determining who (from the multitude of people offering them suggestions) they should actually listen to.

If you look back through the archives of this forum and through various and sundry tickets in trac you will see no end of bad advice, incorrect advice, people ignoring correct advice in favor of said bad or incorrect advice, etc.

We believe having a support forum populated with incorrect information (and where developers never go to offer correct information) is in every way *worse* than simply not having the forum at all.
