Gaim ... Good things and Bad things!

Well!! First of all let me congratulate you for the great work you have done with Gaim. It's definitely the best IM software available on Linux and the best Multi-Protocol on Windows (much better than the bloated Trillian and the complicated Miranda IM).

But ... there's a problem ... The only reason keeping me away from using Gaim. A long time ago the issue was GTK+ that was buggy under Windows, but since 2.10.x that it works just fine! Now the only problem that I really have is the MSN Protocol. Here in my country (Portugal) I'd say that MSN/Windows Live Messenger has about 100% of market share. The MSN protocol works well (even though I miss personal messages besides that I can live without those crappy Winks and other unnecessary stuff) but when it comes to file transfer it's a disaster. Instead of connecting directly to the other contact it transfers trough the .Net Messaging Servers (or so I was told) so it takes an eternity to complete the transfer of a file under 1MB.

Due to this "limitation" I keep using Windows Live Messenger because I can't just keep signing out of Gaim (and closing my conversations) log in into Windows Live Messenger send a file and come back to Gaim.

So want I ask you is anything planned to be done to solve this? Wasn't Summer of Code 2006 suppose to solve this problems and implement MSNP13 (the most recent at that time)?

Thanks for all the hard work you've put into Gaim and keep it up ;)

P.S.: On my search for a solution for my problem I found this:

    http://geddeth.dk/downloads/gaim/

It seems to be unofficial Windows Builds of Gaim! The svn-trunk ones I suppose they are built periodically from Gaim SVN, but those tagged with soc-msnp13 what are they? I would think of Summer of Code MSN Protocol 13 but are they usable? Thank you one again ;)

      I found this:

      http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1621854&group_id=235&atid=300235

But I have no idea how to compile it and use it =S

The MSNP13-builds are there for reference only. They are (most likely) not usable, and available "as is". As mentioned in this thread (http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=37762614) from gaim-devel, the Gaim developers will probably look at that particular SoC-project post-2.0.0 release.

That said, if someone provides me with a tar-ball of Gaim source with a working MSNP13-implementation, I can run it though my Win32 build environment and see if it explodes.

      Cheers,
      Geddeth.

Last I knew Gaim only supported file tranfers under MSN Messager and as was stated above, only through the servers and not via a direct connection.  I find this the only true limitation in Gaim currently, but thankfully I don't send files very often though IM clients.

Unfortunately I need to send files often, mainly because I work with people trough IM and I need to send files and even a few hundred KBs are extremely slow trough Gaim :(
