I thought it was documented somewhere, but oh well. The ball means they're online, the yellow page-looking thing means they're away, and the blue triangle is an AOL logo, meaning they're using AOL, not (g)AIM.

Oh, right, that, sorry. It means that the person is a "Trial AIM User", probably meaning their account is kinda new. If you want to verify this, you can watch gaim in gdb, break at grab_url, and then try to get someone's info, and go to the URL gaim was going to go to. I'm not sure if that's what it actually ends up meaning, but that's what AOL says it means :-P

What you said about trial users reminds me of something. I remember some feature in AIM that you could only use once you verified your email address with AOL. This might be what the blue rectangle means, that you have/haven't yet verified your email.

Does anybody know what the difference between the gray/black ball and the blue rectangle next to the screen names means? It seems to be undocumented.

Well, from the buddy.c file, there are entries for loading xpms for the following cases: away, aol, free, admin, dt, no
