    Hi guys,

I just downloaded pidgin and I installed it and it keeps on crashing on start up.  I've read the stuff of the faq and the dll hell stuff but Im not really getting it.  I don't really know what steps to take to get this to work.  If anyone could help me out It would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

Get a crash report. Install the debug version and post the contents of the .RPT file here, or better check the trac tickets on developer.pidgin.im and see if other people have similar reports.

Heres the report I got.  I saw a few post on crashes because of the ntdll.dll but I didn't see an answer.  Did I miss something?

      thanks

If you saw reports with similar or the same report then you can assume that those reports are being looked at and things will get fixed, and you can watch those reports for updates. I don't know much about this specifically.

Are you using a Weird XP theme or have removed some of the default fonts?

No xp themes.  I do have a font manager though.  Could that be what's causing it?

I don't know what a "font manager" is, but it is likely the cause of your problems.

I moved the plugins to my desktop and then ran the program and it still crashed.  Should I delete them?

yeah i saw that, but I have no idea what to do to fix it.  How do i know if it's caused by dll hell and if so what should I do to fix it.

            Thanks

I hope this helps you guys...anyway, i had the same problem, and what i did to correct was i did a clean install, as in, i installed pidgin to an entirely new directory from where the beta was, otherwise it almost always seems to throw up - try that and see if it works :)

I haven't really been following this thread recently, did you ever get a debug report of the crash?

have you gotten anything to work yet?

if not, and if you haven't already tried this:
in your .purple folder, move your "blist.xml" file somewhere else (like a temp folder or your desktop), and re-launch.  doing this solved my crashing problem; i guess i just have to re-re-arrange my buddy list how i had it before, but as long as it works, then i guess i'm good.

      Same here:
Just upgraded from the beta to 2.0.0; now it crashes on every single open.  I'll attempt to install the debug version and see what it gets me...  I've tried reinstalling a few times, making specially sure to do a fresh install once or twice, no very encouraging results yet.

        Falco98 - 2007-05-06

Well, I seem to have gotten it to work by removing my pre-existing blist.xml;  (i tried moving the entire old .purple folder away then moving the individual files back in one at a time, doing a fresh launch each time, and the culprit turned out to be blist.xml; i suppose it could be worse, sigh)
now I will attempt to manually edit my old blist.xml and see if there are any inconsistencies which I can edit out and solve this annoyance...

I had the same problem after upgrading it. But then i completely deleted it out of my system. As for the .purple file, first i copied elsewhere, started the newly installed Pidgin. Then just but the old stuff back to the .purple file, now everything is fine. But also be care full that you delete the old plugins in the Program Files\Pidgin.
      cheers
