I just installed 1.5.0 (with GTK) on Win XP and at the end asked it to start GAIM. I expected to find GAIM in the system tray. I couldn't find a GUI anywhere. I activated the icon and it said GAIM was already running. I find gaim.exe in the process list but how do I activate the GUI so I can add servers and contacts?

Even with 1.5.0, though, Gaim should pop up a window for you to setup accounts with on first run, which is why I'm curious as to where you downloaded it. (If from the Sourceforge project page, did you pick one of the versions that has 'no-gtk' in the filename? Gaim needs GTK+ installed in order to run (the installers that don't have 'no-gtk' in the filename will install GTK+), but I'd think it would still throw up an error message if that wasn't installed... someone else would know for sure. :) )

I had the same problem when running v1.5.0 on Windows. If you read the GAIM FAQ "Why is Gaim crashing when I start it?", it gave some advice about missing GUI. I renamed the dll "tcl.dll" and it fixed my problem.

Is there another place I can try to get an answer?
First - where did you download 1.5.0?
You might want to try the latest 2.0 beta, 2.0 beta 5 (at the time that I'm typing this). Go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=235&package_id=253&release_id=462444
...and you'll probably want either gaim-2.0.0beta5.exe.

Oops, okay; I can't read, apparently. The subject line does say *WITH* GTK. Hmm...
I installed it from http://gaim.sourceforge.net/win32/.
The 2.0 beta worked much nicer.
Thanks!
I have the same problem except in reverse.
Gaim 1.5.0 works fine for me, but 2.0beta5 doesn't work for me. I'm out of ideas. Can anyone help me out?
Are you installing 2.0b5 over 1.5.0? What happens when you try to run 2.0b5, exactly?
What operating system are you running Gaim on?
