Lately I've been using Windows gaim on XP. One of the features that made me want to use this client is the custom smiley support for MSN, however I've had no luck getting them to work.
Custom smileys are enabled in my MSN account's settings but when I receive them the smiley is not displayed, only a white square box with an X inside. I'm not at home right now but could make a screenshot later if necessary.
Is anyone familiar with this problem? Could it be that I need to forward a certain port or something for it to work? Am I missing some other option or plugin? Any help would be appreciated as I'm really liking the other features offered by this client...
Thanks in advance.

Using the gaim 2.0.0 betas receiving custom MSN smileys should work, they might take a little while to download depending on their size though I believe. You can try looking at the Debug Window output when your buddy sends you a custom smiley to see if you see anything that looks wrong, I'd tell you to post the output here but I wouldn't be able to tell you anything about it, you can try anyway and hope someone who can looks at it.

Okay, I think I captured what goes wrong in the debug window. This is an excerpt showing a buddy sending 5 different custom smileys in succession. For the record I left the window open for quite a while after, but all that was visible was 5 crossed out rectangles.
P.S. I apologize if this turns out to be user error but I really want to get this to work.

receiving custom smiley works. It takes awhile (e.g. not instant) to download. Next time, try it on a fast connection and see if it works or not.

Nope, none of those things. In fact he is one of the contacts I most frequently chat with. Usually when we chat neither of us is on "available" status but rather busy or away because we are working, but I don't think that should matter?
I wouldn't think so but try it when you are both available just to be sure. I got around to trying it with available status on both sides, and I checked with a second contact just to be sure. Still exactly the same error reported in the debug window.
