Wow I just switched from 2.1.1 to 2.3.0 and I seriously cannot stand the interface anymore, whats with the black lines? It just makes everything run together in a most annoying way... And I still don't see an option/plugin to switch back to protocol icons instead of that stupid green circle. I enjoyed this product more when it was still called gaim, I'll probably revert back to it just to gain back some kind of functionality that I want/require/desire. And why the name change any how? I still don't get what's up with that. If they were going for something off the wall bizarre they get an A+, besides the other name was just fine and it somewhat made more sense, at least the icon was better... imo...
So to recap what I need to know/find out is how to revert back to protocol icons and switch from that stupid black line to the bar that used to be there.

I'm assuming by the "blank line" you mean the group header separator in the buddy list. In which case the only way to get the colored backgrounds back is to edit the source to uncomment the line that added them (and optionally remove the line that draws the black line).
There is no option to replace the status icons with the protocol icons, and there will not be one. The current option to add them in a separate column was a compromise. If you want them to replace the status icons you can write the plugin we have been suggesting people write from the beginning.
As to the name change the reasons were explained dozens of times in many different places, I'm sure if you search for it you can find them. And for the record 'pidgin' isn't "off the wall bizarre" it is in fact a word (http://wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=pidgin&sub=Search+WordNet&o2=&o0=1&o7=&o5=&o1=1&o6=&o4=&o3=&h=)
and no the other name didn't make any sense, it just was.

I didn't really care what color it is, but the black line for me makes everything run to getter like when you read a paper that has a generic font and is really small, everything blends together. As far as the source goes, I guess it could be edited, but I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to compile it on windows, if you could help point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated.
I'm not sure how to add them into the 'separate column' either, any help on that would be appreciated as well, I've looked through the plugins and pref's windows but didn't find anything of that nature. As far as writing the plugin myself, I really don't have the first inkling in how to do that, and as such being on the project wouldn't it be easier for you to do it since you already know how? imo why should a lowly user have to do it, you had it there before and then took it out and for what reason? I don't know... :( Why not just make it an option that people can turn on if they want? Why all this run around? The adage goes if something ain't broke, don't fix it. If at any level maybe you could have made it more like themes that could be chosen per user, why not something like that then?
And the name makes me think of the bird, which the icon is obviously of... but with your explanation it makes far greater sense... ok so the name makes sense, now why the icon? Is it just there to intentionally confuse people?
Thanks for your help/input.

There are directions for setting up the Windows build environment in the FAQ if you want to do it, and even a script to help set most of it up for you (though the script occasionally gets a bit out of date and then the author just needs some prodding to fix it up).
Buddies->Show->Protocol Icons will turn on protocol icons in their own column.
I'm going to explain (for at least the thousandth time) why we removed the protocol icons, if you want to find out our reasons you can search for the couple forum threads on the topic, the more than a couple email threads on the topic, or the handful of tickets on the topic all of which explain our reasons. Suffice it to say we did have reasons and they are good ones.
I have no idea what you mean about the icon. pidgin is a real word which has the benefit of meaning something appropriate and of being phonetically similar to an animal which decided to use as our mascot/logo, it also served as the basis for our suggested client naming scheme, pidgin for the GTK+ UI, finch for the console UI, instantbird for the third-party mozilla/javascript/xul/something UI.
